Daily rhythm

A lot of us are experiencing a swirl of changes outside in the world.

Whether we continue to show up in the workforce or have been temporarily halted, whether we are working from home without childcare support or taking care of the ill, we are all making adjustments to daily life across the globe. In light of all the fear, there has been such a beautiful stimulus in the community to join together in new and interesting ways while we socially distance. I am so impressed and inspired by how folks are rising up together during this time by offering incredible resources and social solidarity. I just want to remind all of us (myself included) that there are many ways to cope, and many feelings to feel, the entire spectrum of which is perfectly okay.

Building in radical self care into my daily rhythm is a coping strategy that I am thoroughly implementing at this time. It helps me to create a sense of stability amidst the chaos. Rather than having a rigid to-do list or daily schedule, what rings true for me right now is to maintain a balanced daily rhythm with a whole lot of wiggle room and compassion. For me, that means choosing a couple activities from each of the following categories.

BRAIN 🧠 flex the intellect

  • work from home

  • read professional-related research/blogs

  • listen to podcasts

  • take a free online class

  • learn a language

BODY 💪🏽 stimulate the somatic system

  • yoga and fitness

  • walk, run, cycle outdoors

  • lay on the earth

  • dance or shake it out

  • self-massage

MIND 🙏🏼 mindfulness

  • meditation (currently loving the insight timer app) & pranayama

  • create art

  • read for fun

  • plant seeds in the garden

  • make music

SOCIAL 💭 connection

  • check in on and offer support for neighbors, folks with kids, and elderly

  • video call family

  • organize a virtual reunion with a friend group

  • host a virtual dance party

  • send snail mail

How are you feeling? How do you wish to feel? Which actions (or inactions) can you focus on as you adjust your daily life to support your ability to feel that way?
