According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AGOG), exercise during pregnancy benefits you and your fetus in these key ways:

▽ Reduces back pain
▽ Eases constipation
▽ May decrease your risk of gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and cesarean delivery
▽ Promotes healthy weight gain during pregnancy
▽ Improves your overall general fitness and strengthens your heart and blood vessels
▽ Helps you to lose the baby weight after your baby is born

My clinical perspective on exercise during pregnancy

Anecdotally, those with uncomplicated pregnancies and deliveries who are able to stay active during their pregnancy tend to have smoother recoveries which allows them to take care of themselves and their newborn with greater ease. Ahem, much more valuable than losing weight postpartum!! I also notice that those with complicated deliveries tend to have have the tools and reserve (mental and physical) to help support their healing. Lastly, we know that exercise supports mood and can help regulate sleep cycles. That’s a BIG deal when it comes to mental health.

I’d also like to add that even if you do everything according to the books, sometimes complications occur, and that is not a reflection of your strength as a human. I see you and want you to know that you are amazing no matter where you are on your path and how hard it can be to realize how different your journey looks compared to your expectations.

Pelvic girdle pain is one of the primary complaints that limits pregnant folks from staying active, particularly in the second and even more so in the third trimester. If you find yourself coming up against roadblocks due to your current status that make it hard for you to stay the course, please reach out to a local physio who can help you modify your activities.
